12/1/87

This morning we had a good home cooked breakfast, took showers (Ahhh! Had only had one on Sat., and it'd been COLD, but felt good!) did laundry (hung it up to dry) - then packed up and went to get the bike back!

With the bike again on the roof, we drove out to Pu Pu Springs, another amazing natural wonder - Jim even went in with face mask tho' it's a very cold spring - awesome! I was impressed!

Then we drove out to the other end of town to FEED THE EELS! We couldn't agree on whether it was an elderly woman or man, but she/he had an old dog (only one eye) and took us down to the river (the dog barking all the way, no doubt signaling the eels!) where all of the BIG BLACK EELS swam and slipped over each other wanting to be fed! WOW! It's like a ritual this old person does every day, and because it's so UNUSUAL, it's also a little source of income and a way to be in touch with people ($1.00/person).

By then we were ready to collect our laundry and hightail it out of Takaka!

Drove one last time over Takaka Hill (first time in that direction!), just stopping along the way for petrol, beer, food - NOW we are camped by a a stream, with a picnic table - cooked dinner over a fire, spending this time writing...

Tomorrow, the West Coast!
